February Round Up!

Well… February happened. And suddenly we’re staring down the start of the season wondering how the winter flew by so quickly.

The event horses have been out showjumping at Chard and I’m very pleased (and slightly smug) to say we’ve brought home 6 double clears from 8 rounds over the last couple of weeks. That’s not luck, that’s winter gridwork, flatwork, jumping courses and resisting the urge to “just see what happens” when you turn to a fence!

Training with Jo Rimmer at William Fox-Pitt’s has been great for my partnership with Dolly and Dan, and my own riding and adaptability between riding two extremely talented but extremely different horses. The focus on balance and rideability is paying off, and the horses are feeling more adjustable and confident each outing. Tweseldown is just a couple of weeks away and for once I feel quietly organised… which is completely different to last year!

Dolly vs Water (Round 1…000)

Mouse tackling the solid fences!
Mouse tackling the solid fences!

We’ve built a little XC schooling set-up in the old sand school which has been brilliant for keeping things ticking over and introducing solid fences to Mouse and others. No excuses about the ground. No excuses about what jumps there are, the horses learn to jump solid fences on varied terrain and not in a big lovely arena. Pretty well simulated DIY XC if you ask me..!

And Dolly… bless her… is finally getting over her slightly dramatic fear of water. After behaving as though she was being asked to cross the Atlantic rather than a shallow splash, she’s now decided it might not be the end of the world after all. So that’s one excuse officially removed for this season. The rain has also helped by creating multiple unintentional but very useful water features throughout the area.

Half Term Chaos (The Good Kind)

Half term activity days were just brilliant. So many enthusiastic little equestrians who wanted to know everything... From “why does he swish his tail?” to “can I canter now?” five minutes after arrival. Hoping they're memorising the points of the horse before their next lesson as I might start doing some random quizzing...

It’s genuinely lovely seeing that kind of eagerness within these guys. They worked hard, learned loads, and went home tired- which I’m sure parents appreciated!

Activity days for the rest of the year are now live and spaces are already filling fast. If you want your child to have something to look forward to during school holidays (and maybe burn off some energy), get booked in sooner rather than later to avoid dissapointment! If you have any questions on this don't hesitate to get in touch.

Team CW Eventing. They Mean Business

The staff have absolutely worked their socks off this winter. It's felt long. It's been cold and wet and we've had A LOT of horses on the yard. Big shoutout to Maddi, Florence, Laela, Henry and Bella. You guys are amazing and I really couldn't do this without you. They headed off to jump training at Sparrowbush last week and smashed it. Confident rounds, tidy riding, and most importantly they all left with big smiles. They’re now gearing up for their first competition of the year, Showjumping at Moreton Equestrian on 8th March. It’s always exciting seeing them step into the ring and work on their riding goals and dreams too. Let’s go team!!!

New Team Member Alert

Bella has joined us on an apprenticeship this month and she has already slotted in like she’s been here for years. She’s learning quickly, cracking on with everything, and hasn’t run away yet- which is always a good sign in this industry! She's great and is a real asset to the team which im sure everyone will agree.

Keep up the great work Bella. I’m really excited to see how you develop and what you achieve with us.

A Bittersweet Goodbye

Rue headed off to her lovely new home in Dartmoor this month and I won’t pretend it wasn’t emotional. She's a homebred and has bought a lot of joy to the girls throughout the process of her education.

She’s settled in beautifully though and we’re so grateful for the updates from her new owner. Apparently she’s already been out exploring Dartmoor and living her best life. Exactly what we wanted for her even if we do miss her. She will bring many years of happiness to her new owner, I have no doubts about it.

Quick (But Important) Reminder

Just a reminder that if you need to cancel a lesson, we now handle cancellations directly and if it’s within 48 hours unfortunately refunds can’t be issued.

We’ve had a few cancellations recently, so if you’re on a waitlist or hoping to grab a lesson, keep checking the calendar. Spaces do appear but they go quickly.

We also are running a feedback survey as we are continually wanting to improve the business for you all. Please be so kind as to fill it out, it will only take you a couple of minutes!

There’s a proper buzz around the yard at the moment. The horses are feeling fit and ready, and the season is just around the corner.

Time to dust off the cross country colours and pretend I’m not slightly nervous.

Thank you so much for all of your support,

Chris & the horses at CW Eventing Coaching Academy & Stud
